Directly related to our first reading, check out "The Story of Mike Phillips," an episode of "This American Life" (below). Like Jean-Dominique Bauby, Phillips is mostly immobilized and learns to communicate by blinking his eyes and other delicate movements. Phillips, however, benefits from a unique technological system that helps him peck out the individual letters needed for textual communication. He also gets some help from Johnny Depp ...

Participation :

The struggles faced in this video perfectly reflect those of Bauby in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, for in both cases these individuals were stripped of an ability we often take for granted - the ability to communicate. Both stories embody the vitality of communication, and the influence it has in the modern society of today. Like stated by Mike, technology coincides with newfound 'problems.' Unfortunately, this was not the case for Bauby. This portrays the increasing dependence partaken by human beings on technology to communicate. This is a flaw of society in that - should we no longer have technology, we would be lost in our individual thoughts having forgotten how to "manually" express ourselves and share ideas.

Actually I agree with what Clayre said about if we lose technology we can't communicate. In ancient time there was no high technology but people's relationships with each other are much more harmonious than today's. Sometimes people can communicate quite well without language. It's like there is a tacit understanding between certain people such as confidants or lovers. We can less rely on technology than we do now.
