Play & Tell
The world is large and contains multitudes of music. This course will run through a fair chunk of it related to our specific purposes — but you likely know a lot of music that others here haven't heard yet, or you may have a different take on the genres we explore, or you might know about cool tracks from decades we won't get to. So pick one, and tell us about it ...
On your assigned Wednesday (per the schedule below, which we'll divvy up in week 2), do and deliver the following:
— Read and review the assigned readings for the week. Think: does any of this make me think of "____" by ____?
— Select a song that somehow reflects the concepts of the week's readings and class discussion and/or its particular situation in the historical context at issue. Listen to the song carefully (even if you know it well).
— Download the Play & Tell form from the TritonEd content folder, complete it, and turn it in via the TritonEd link.
— I'll carve out time on Wednesdays and maybe into Fridays as it is available to bring up interesting selections and ideas. Given our limited class time, I won't get to everyone (or, some weeks, perhaps anyone), but be prepared to stand in class and introduce your song, as well as guide any discussion that follows.
This assignment is worth half of your whole participation grade. You will be graded on the following criteria: your effort in selecting a song that enlightens the course discussion; your demonstration (in writing at least, but also if you have a chance to speak) of course concepts; your thoroughness in completing the Play & Tell form.
It is your responsibility to be aware of your assigned participation day and be prepared.
Schedule of Play & Tells:
Week 3 (Wed 4.17): Orta, Rowe, Shin, Suppa
Week 4 (Wed 4.24): Tapia, Driscoll, Bender, Villa, Hungerford
Week 5 (Wed 5.1): Hwang, Y. Wang, Z. Wang, Lomarquez, Abdul-Shakoor
Week 6 (Wed 5.8): Teuton, Xia, Ward, Woollett, Pemberton
Week 7 (Wed 5.15): Faigon, Arzoomanians, Cuk, Longstreet, Barrios
Week 8 (Wed 5.22): Diaz de Leon, Diaz, H. Chen, Liu, Clark
Week 9 (Wed 5.29): Beihold, Hoang, Kern, Zhuang, S. Chen
Note: If you are seriously uncomfortable speaking before the group, see me during office hours. Keep in mind that one aspect of academic study is just this — standing before a group of your peers and talking about your ideas. Take advantage of the safe space in an undergrad course like this to practice and hone these skills!
