Searching for some information on a favorite L.A. cult pop band, Smart Brown Handbag, I stumbled onto a music site called The War Against Silence. The review there of an old SBH release was one of the best pieces of music criticism I have read, and I emailed the hapless Boston computer geek running the site to tell him as much in a harangue of superlatives. His response was understandably cautious. The rest of the site is equally as sharp, with a handful of new CD reviews posted each week. Recommended reading.
One of the most sublime indie bands working is a San Francisco based bunch called Wheat. Their records are tender and supple. Their label, Sugar Free, opened an office in Norman, Okla. go figure and their web site has a great video for my favorite Wheat song, "Don't I Hold You." Click here, and watch beautiful people suck face for three minutes.
I love short films, and for some reason there are thousands of gay short films. With a Powerbook and a cable modem, Daniel and I have been enjoying the hundreds of films available for viewing online through the Planet Out short film awards site. It's hit or miss, but we've stumbled across some great work. Also and especially for any fellow Heritage Hall alumni out there another good online short film is "A Good Son," starring Jay Michael Ferguson (David's lil' bro, the high preistess of show choir circa early '90s). Look it up at Atom Films.
Want a taste of the Tulsa music scene? Check out the 600-plus tracks from Tulsa artists on the Tulsa pages at MP3.com. Some recommendations: the Native American flute modernizations of Steve Osburn, the pop craft of Admiral Twin or Nathan Brant, the hip-hop of Medu-Netr or C-Note, the Irish drinking songs of Raparree.
I work at the Tulsa World. The site just became accessible only by subscribers, so I present this link begrudingly. Don't get me started on that brilliant decision from management .... That Weather Channel site I used to link to is always wrong. Their forecasts couldn't hit the broadside of a hurricane. I've learned that TV may be evil, but TV meteorologists are always the best. For Tulsa weather (and some good cross-country web cams), hit KTUL-Channel 8's weather pages. Pages I hit at least every other day:
My online music-information touchstones: the encyclopedia of the All-Music Guide, the concert listings from Pollstar trade magazine, the broad palate of music reviews and some occasional inventive writing at Pitchfork, and the handy resource of the All Lyrics page. Miss Napster? Download LimeWire and get your mp3 addiction back in a matter of minutes. Listen online to the best radio station in America, WFUV out of New York City. I ain't looking as of this moment, but I keep my resume site up to date, just to be smart. Here are some web cam views of Tulsa. |
